Home Remedies to Improve Immunity

To fight off various diseases and infections, it’s important to have good immune health. One way to do this is through developing healthy habits, such as eating healthy foods, avoiding fast food, and exercising regularly. However, these habits are often easier said than done. If you require some immune support but don’t want to go see your doctor or use expensive medication, consider trying out one of these few home remedies to improve immunity. 

Each remedy contains inexpensive ingredients that can be found at most stores, as well as instructions on how best to use them.

1) Echinacea Tea

Echinacea tea is one of the most popular herbal teas for boosting immunity. This tea is made from the echinacea plant, which is native to North America. 

Echinacea has been used medicinally for centuries by Native Americans and is now widely available in supplements and teas. 

The active ingredients in echinacea are thought to be immune-stimulating compounds called polysaccharides. 

Echinacea tea can be enjoyed fresh or dry and is often combined with other immune-boosting herbs like ginger, turmeric, and elderberry. 

To make a cup of echinacea tea, simply steep 1 teaspoon of dried herb in 8 ounces of boiling water for 10 minutes.

2) Oats and Barley

Oats and barley are whole grains that are packed with nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients are important for preserving a healthy immune system. 

Research has shown that eating oats and barley can help improve immunity. One study found that eating oats increased the number of white blood cells in the body. 

Another study found that barley extract can help improve the function of natural killer cells. Natural killer cells are a type of white blood cell that helps fight off viruses and bacteria.

3) Ginger

Ginger is a root that has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb. It’s effective in treating nausea, pain, and inflammation. 

Studies have shown that ginger can also help boost immunity. To make a ginger tea, add a few slices of fresh ginger to boiling water and let steep for 10 minutes. 

You can also take ginger supplements or apply ginger essential oil diluted in a carrier oil to your skin. 

Be careful when consuming high doses of ginger though because it can thin the blood which could lead to bleeding if you are on medication such as Warfarin (a common blood thinner).

4) Garlic

Garlic is a powerhouse when it comes to boosting immunity. Allicin, a compound in garlic, has antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infections. 

Garlic is also a natural source of antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation. To get the most benefit from garlic, crush a clove and let it sit for 10 minutes before adding it to your food.  

You can also drink garlic tea by simmering three cloves of chopped garlic in water with honey or lemon. You can also use garlic oil topically as an antibacterial treatment on cuts and scrapes. 

5) Sweet Potatoes

One simple way to improve your immunity is by eating more sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients like vitamin A and vitamin C, which are essential for a strong immune system. 

They also contain antioxidants that help fight off infection. Plus, they’re delicious and can be easily added to any meal.  

Boil or roast them in the oven before mashing them up or cutting them into fries. If you prefer using a microwave, just pierce the skin of the potato with a fork and cook it on high for about five minutes. 

For an even easier solution, try purchasing pre-cooked mashed sweet potatoes from the grocery store!

6) Honey

Natural remedies have been used with honey for centuries. It’s a delicious, sweet way to boost your immune system. 

Honey is full of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Just a tablespoon of honey can help fight off infections and allergies. 

Add honey to your diet by stirring it into tea or coffee, drizzling it over oatmeal or yogurt, or simply eating it straight up! 

Another great way to get honey in your diet is by taking a spoonful in the morning. The taste of raw honey will leave you feeling refreshed and energized for the day ahead.

7) Turmeric

Turmeric is an orange-colored spice often used in Indian cuisine. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory properties. 

Some studies suggest that it may help boost the immune system. Turmeric can be consumed in powder form, or as tea. 

It can also be taken as a supplement, but it’s best to speak with a doctor before doing so. If you’re interested in trying turmeric, then mix 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric with warm water and drink three times daily. 

8) Carrots

Carrots are not only delicious, but they’re also great for boosting your immune system. Carrots are packed with Vitamin A, which is essential for a healthy immune system. 

Plus, the beta-carotene in carrots can help keep your skin healthy, which is another important line of defense against infection. 

So, eat up! You might want to consider adding carrot juice or cooked carrots into your diet. Remember that cooked vegetables have a higher vitamin content than raw vegetables, so steam them lightly if you want more nutrients and less of an earthy taste.

9) Black Tea

Compared to green, white, or oolong tea, black tea is more oxidized. Black tea is made from the Camellia sinensis plant and has many antioxidants that can improve your health. 

Some research suggests that black tea may boost immunity by helping the body fight off infection. 

For example, one study found that people who drank black tea for 6 weeks had a lower risk of getting a cold than those who didn’t drink any tea.

10) Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is a kind of chili pepper that has a spice known as capsaicin. This substance is known for its ability to boost circulation and improve blood flow. 

Additionally, cayenne pepper can help clear congestion, fight inflammation, and speed up healing. To use cayenne pepper as a home remedy, add 1 teaspoon of the powder to 8 ounces of water. 

Drink this mixture 3 times per day. You can also add cayenne pepper to soups or stews, or sprinkle it on your food.
